The one where they take our parenting license away

This summer, we took our kids on vacation. From the left, chairs three and four:
Something to note, my six year old is 52" tall. There was only one ride she couldn't go on. I bet she's the required 54" by next summer.

Until then, the memories of the Giant Barn Swing will have to sustain.
...
I never understood as a kid how my mom could sit on the sidelines and watch us. Really, I mean, there's fun to be had! How can you sit? Why don't you want to go?!?
Now I get it. I am good for 4 or 5 coasters, then I'm fine to watch.
There's something to be said for being able to send your kids on a ride and just watch. Don't worry, Mom, we watched very carefully.

Promises, Promises

Here I sit, making another list.

Things I didn't get done this summer and I probably coulda/woulda/shoulda:
Clean out the cabinets
Sort last year's school papers
Paint the last bedroom
Finish sorting the basement
Go through the Miscellaneous boxes in the basement
Have the kids read more
Re-seal the granite countertops
Sort the kids' art supplies
Make a new duvet cover/curtains for my bedroom
New quilt for my Oldest Daughter
Clean out my closet
Clean out the kids' closets.
Get rid of the clothes that don't fit.

Tomorrow is the first day of school, with that, summer is over no matter what the calendar says. I guess that throws this list to "What I do all day with the kids gone since I don't have a 'job'".

When Mother Nature Interferes

The kids came home yesterday. What should have been a 3 1/2 hour journey was closer to 6. Both the highway and interstate were closed due to flooding. My peeps. I missed them so. Home safe and sound, we offered parents refuge from the rain that is supposed to happen the next three days. Undeterred, they headed home.

Another Hot Saturday Night

It's 10:20 and I'm in bed. Catching up on my computer time, I'm listening to David Gray on Live from the Artist's Den on PBS.

Yes. Public Television.

I may have mentioned a time or two that we don't have cable, direct tv, dish, DVR, or any channels that can't be picked up on an HD Antenna.

Yes. Antenna.

This afternoon I tidied the bedroom to Antiques Roadshow. Later, I folded laundry to The Lawrence Welk Show. That took me back to sitting on my Great Grandmother's floor, eating an ice cream sandwich and drinking a strawberry or grape pop. Or sometimes, if the fates were with us - a Dr Pepper.

When we were younger, we'd go play in the basement, careful of her wintered plants, crank up the gramophone, and jump on the spare bed. As we grew, we'd greet her with a hug and a kiss, inspect her insignificant flaws in her thread crochet, and then ask if we could change the channel. Mom would sometimes object, but Gram over-rode those objections and we'd find ourselves watching MTV - something it seemed that everyone but us had. Yes, country living even then.

There were three things I could always count on when we visited Gram: syrupy sweet pop, ice cream sandwiches, and Lawrence Welk.

What to do today...

The older two are at church day camp this week. Gone from 8 to 3, they leave the youngest at a bit of a loss. Last night at bedtime, she informed me that I need to wake her up so she can tell them goodbye. Even though I knew what would happen, I still woke her up.

I woke her up and carried her downstairs while she asked me how long they'd be gone. Hours or minutes? How long Momma? How long? She solemly hugged them each goodbye and then raised her arms to be held. With big tears, she stood at the door waving as they left.

The tears left as quickly as they came. She's 'recovering' now on the couch, able to watch whatever she wants while I figure out the plan for the day. It won't be as willy-nilly as the rest of the week as we have an oral surgeon appointment for the oldest in the morning and a regular dental appointment for the rest of us this afternoon.

What to do, oh what to do.

There's laundry to be done, drawers to be cleaned out, and toilets to be scrubbed. There's also a baby blanket to be made and curtains to be figured out for the kitchen.

Sew or clean...

Hmm...

Summer Living

I'm as tan, blonde, and thin as I've ever been. Not trying to gloat, but...

For me losing weight, though not easy, isn't the hard part. Maintaining it is. I promised myself once I got back to 175, I'd keep myself in the 170's. Right now I'm 184.

What does that mean?

It means I need to get back to the 80/20 principle. Do good 80% of the time, and the other 20% will work itself out. I found that for the first couple weeks I could do well Monday through Friday and then have a little slack Saturday and Sunday. (Or use Sunday as my "reboot" day - with Friday and Saturday as my slack days.)

For the last several weeks, I found that I can barely eke out one good day, let alone five. It's not that I can't, I just choose not to. And by choose, I mean I grab a bag of chips versus nuts/cheese/veggies. Pizza instead of a salad with a little pepperoni and mozzarella cheese. Crispy tacos instead of a taco salad (no shell). Two bowls of cereal instead of two eggs.

I'm owning these choices.

But it has. to. stop.

Now.

As of today, I've had three good days. With the stress of the dentist/oral surgeon Monday, freakishly following my oldest on Tuesday, and now today - I've strung together three good days.

Three.

I promised myself once the kids are back in school I'd kick the workout routine in gear. I found that once I dropped the weight, 6 - 8 miles wasn't a problem. I'd like to get back there again.

For now, I'm following my friend Tree's lead... And taking it one more. Let's call it the 3 x 100 Challenge - three exercises, adding one more each day, until I reach 100. Today: one push up, one sit up, and one burpee. Tomorrow - two of each. And so on. See you on Oct 21st...
Now. To find a race to train for...

Lest we forget - Before:
Let's not go back there again.

The days go slow, the years go fast

What greets us when my husband and I slip out on the deck after the kids are in bed: It's quite the life I lead here.

GORP

It's that time of year again: falling back into the pattern of three meals (plus snacks) to keep three kids running.

One of the kids' favorites is gorp. Those of the camping set may already know what I'm talking about - Good Old Raisins & Peanuts. To many, it is simply trail mix. We took it every time we went camping and it was always a hit. The mingling flavors is something I associate with summer.

The great thing about it, is it can contain just about anything:
cereal - regular or sweetened, whatever you have on hand
crackers - goldfish are great
nuts (peanuts, cashews, walnuts, almonds, etc)
seeds (sunflower!)
dried fruit (raisins, cherries, cranberries, apples, etc)
and maybe even a bit of candy (we prefer M&M's because they don't melt in your hands - or turn your mix into a mess).

It is shelf stable and travels well. It can be as upscale or pedestrian as you like. I also like it because it is something the kids can put together on their own.

Our biggest battle is whose turn it is to decide what goes into it. I try and have several options on hand - and inevitably the m&m's are a big hit and get eaten first. It's great to take to the pool and the kids make a bit deal of letting me know when they are eating something other than the candy!

What are some of your favorite summer foods?

My how time flies...

It's been awhile, I know. Things have been a bit hectic and heavy around here.

First off, the kids are out of school and now in summer school! It's not as bad as it sounds - at least for me! We had a week off, it should have been two but had to make up 6 snow days, and back they went. For the week off we hosted a neighborhood boy that had a gap in child care. It was really fun and they were all well behaved. We went to the pool multiple times, painted bird houses, and tye-dyed t-shirts. This week, though, my husband has been dropping them off bright and early at 8 am and I pick them up at noon. It's only for three weeks, and they're doing quite a few fun projects.

Secondly, I made a quilt for each of my kids' teachers - so three if you're keeping track. Hopefully we'll have Internet back at the house soon and I can post pictures. Yes - we're having Internet problems that are keeping me from the rest of the world so I've come to the library to catch up. Even my phone Internet is acting up! You'd think I'd get more done around the house, but there are so many better things to do - like go to the pool!!!

Also, I have come to a realization with someone in my life. This is how it has to be for awhile. I never again want to find myself standing again in a store, mouth hanging open having just been bitched out, swore at, and left. The hits just keep coming and I'm sick of it. How many times can you kick a dog before it flinches every time you walk by? Mad doesn't come close to describe how I'm feeling. Having a relationship that goes from almost daily phone calls to terse texts and knowing that I don't even warrant a phone call is painful. Hurt. Hurt pretty much sums it up. I've been told I just need to "get over it and move on." Easy to say, harder to do. Normally I think I can bounce back pretty quick, but this has cut me to the quick. At some point, the feelings I have will loose intensity and we may be able to at least talk again, but I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to the way things were. I've just been hurt like this one too many times. I know I'm not blameless it this, and have been given plenty of food for introspection.

Finally on the up side, I've managed to maintain my weight pretty well (good?!?). For the first time in more years than I can count, I'm wearing a two piece to the pool. An honest to goodness two piece - no tankini for me - with plenty of (now tanned) tummy showing. And I look so good, I may even post a picture - then again - maybe not!

Happy Friday all!

With the kids home for the summer, and my husband home since February 12th, it feels like every day is Saturday.

No reason to get up too early, no reason to worry too much about bedtime... This morning I slept until 9:30, and my youngest until 9:45.

I know it will come to an end soon enough, but I'm just enjoying the time right now.

...

Friday afternoon I'm hosting an informal happy hour for the neighborhood ladies. I figure we should make good use of the patio while we have it.

Anyone have any favorite drink or appetizer recipes?

I was thinking sangria... and guacamole. But I'm open to suggestions...

The Great Camping Adventure of 2008

I called my sister yesterday to let her know I was communing with Nature:

Hey, you busy? (she was at work)
A little, but I can make time for you. (She's so nice)
Um, Yea, We're Camping.
Oh really?
Um... Except there's a pool and a waterpark.
I see...
And we're in a camper...
Reeeeaaally.
So we're not really camping.
Yea, I figured that out...

Growing up, our idea of camping involved a tent, a fire, a lot of bug spray, digging a trench, and hauling in our own water. It did not involve a water feature:

Or a pool:

I am still trying to figure out how a child so long and lean came from my loins. Really, she's something else.

And my toddler? How she started vacation:

And ended it... Notice the lack of life jacket.

Yes, my neighbor was there to assist, but the Toddler just plopped in, hit the surface, and swam to the edge. Three times.

I will neither confirm nor deny that I did one or more front-flips off that diving board.

Oh, and they had a 'petting zoo.' And a donkey that sounded like he was getting, or needed to get, laid at three in the morning. Eeeh-oah! Eeeh-oah!

The Boy loved the animals.

I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to cut that hair. My brown eyed, brown haired boy spent a little time in the sun this summer. Know how much some women pay for highlights to look like that?!?

Camp.

Me? I'm not much of a morning person. I do have fantastic bed-head though.

These shoes - my marathon shoes - have been relegated to camping shoes.

I hope I get to use them again before too long.

Now then. Off to get some laundry done.

A lot of laundry.

Monday, Monday

Summer is winding down. Finally.

Last night our back yard was turned into a baseball field.

If you build it, they will come.

My husband and eight or nine kids played an impromptu game. Another Dad joined in, and the teams were surprisingly fair.

The Toddler and I took a nap instead. Not intentional, mind you, but we were just going to snuggle a bit. Two hours later we woke up. Both of our moods dramatically improved.

Last week, Amanda Jean set about to make some baby quilts. I dragged out the sock monkey fabric and got to work.

It's more green than yellow, and will make a great gift.

I have enough to make at least one more, though the fabric will vary.

Now... To find time to quilt it.

This afternoon a neighbor and I are taking the kids camping for a couple days. She thought it might be fun, and I know the kids will love it. Me? I'm just hoping the weather holds. Part of the state was under a frost advisory last night. Some of it even under a freeze advisory. Oy.

Like the whirling dirvish they are, they returned...

In one fell swoop, my house returned to normal. Fortunately Grandma and Grandpa returned them fairly well rested and with a bag full of clean clothes.

They had a great time. Fishing, hanging out in the hot tub, visiting their cousins, fishing, going to a baseball game, making play clay, hitting golf balls, fishing, hanging out in the hot tub, reading books, shooting the bow and arrow...

As nice as it was to have the house practically to myself, I'm glad they're home. Sure, my husband was still here, but he went to work during the day.

I did manage to get all three rooms cleaned out. The totals? Seven big black garbage bags of trash. Ten paper bags of clothes to go to my sister. Emptied the Dyson twice.

Lest you think my children are messy... More like miniature hoarders. Hey, they learned from the best of them.

Now, if the house would just stay as clean when there here as when they're gone...

Friday, August 08, 2008

Yea, well... It's not what they planned either.

Yesterday after gleefully sending the kids off, I tackled the Big Girl's room. Three bags of trash and three paper Target sacks of clothes later, it's ready. I did however leave the top dresser drawer alone. Everyone - even kids - need a junk drawer.

Sometime mid-afternoon, I got a call from my mom. Nothing to worry about, but the big girl's foot hurt a bit and upon examination Grandma noticed some whitish spots on the bottom of it. I passed along our insurance info, and they headed to the doctor.

Grandpa dropped them off and took the other two to the park.

While at the park, my youngest slipped and hit her nose on the play structure. Right between the eyes.

Grandpa immediately put ice on it - he happened to have a fountain Diet Coke - and rushed her to the doctor.

He felt horrible. I assured him that it just as easily could have happened to me as him. It's not if kids get hurt, it's when.

My oldest had no more gotten done learning that she has pressure blisters, than my youngest was ushered right to the same room. Rather than play the 'she's probably fine' game, the doctor ordered a set of x-rays to make sure that nothing was damanged - like her eye sockets.

Thankfully she's made of rubber, and all the x-rays look fine. They were given a list of things to look for, along with gently checking her every two hours during the night.

Two out of three isn't bad, right?

Well about the third...

At the park my Boy decided to see how many times he could spin in circles before he threw up.

The answer? A lot.

There you have it - the first day at Grandma and Grandpa's yielded two doctor's visits, five x-rays, and one episode of vomit.

...

Today?

Today they're all fine. Grandma bought the Big Girl some very cushy socks and shoes. No more flip-flops for her. The Boy? Upon learning his limit he's back to going forward and back on the swing. And my Baby? She's fine too, except for the two black eyes.

Nuthin' says loving like somethin' from the oven

In case you didn't know, tonight is National Night Out.

Our neighborhood is gathering in the cul-de-sac for brats and beer. Because we're small-time-USA, a fire truck and police car will be stopping by. And no, not because the neighbors called either.

It should be a great time. As part of the preparations, I pre-boiled 15 pounds of brats this morning. That is a lot.

Best way to pre-boil brats:
Butter
Onion
Beer
Brats
Saute some onions in butter, being careful not to brown them. Don't be stingy. Add the beer and bring it to a boil. Simmer brats in beer for 10-15 minutes before grilling. If not grilling right away, put them in the fridge. Grill 10-15 minutes or until the skin is nice and crispy.

Also, I put together some brownies:

Peanut Butter Cup Brownies
1 box "family size" brownie mix (13x9 pan)
1 bag mini Reece's Peanut Butter Cups.

Mix brownie mix according to package directions. Unwrap (duh!) and quarter nearly the whole bag of RPBC. I say nearly all because my kids help and I know they eat several as they go. Pour into a lightly greased 9 x 13 pan and bake according to brownie directions. If you're up for it, after they cool drizzle a little melted peanut butter over the brownies.

Finally, because I'm a complete overachiever, I made some deviled eggs:
1 dozen hard boiled eggs*
mayo
vinegar
salt
pepper (white if you have it, otherwise black will do)
dash of hot sauce if you're feeling spicy.
paprika

Combine yolks with a little mayo, splash of vinegar, salt, pepper and hot sauce. Unfortunately, I don't have exact measurements - maybe 1/4 c mayo, 2 Tablespoons vinegar? If necessary, start small and add a little at a time. To refill the whites, I put the yolk mixture in a zip top bag and snip the corner. Makes a quick, easy, and disposable piping bag. Top with a dash of paprika.

*to hard boil eggs, put in a pan with enough cool water to cover. Bring to a boil over medium high heat. Once water starts to boil, turn off heat and let set for 15 minutes. Then cool in an ice bath.

...

Not much else. Managed to get four loads of laundry done yesterday and two today. Thursday my husband will be dropping the kids off at my parents for a week. Yes, a whole week they'll be gone. My plan is to finish Tree's quilt and clean out the kids' rooms. Not very exciting, unless you're me. Heh.

Just Another Day in Paradise. Alternately titled: Me, in a Swimsuit

Yesterday I promised the kids a trip to the pool. Now that the big girl has her waterproof cast, we can do things like that.

They started out slow. The Toddler requested a life jacket, which made us both breathe a little easier. No worries, she was always within arms reach.

The big girl? Not so much. As you can see, the cast isn't slowing her down.

With the Toddler wanting to rest on her chair that left The Boy. For the most part, he was content to jump off the edge repeatedly. That left me to contemplate a new pedicure.

On thing I love about the toddler - she's not afraid to help me hold down a lawn chair. And yes, that's me in a swimsuit.

All was well and good. Keeping a close eye on the Big Girl jumping, and the Boy jumping, and being at the Toddler's beck and call... Until. The boy wanted to jump off the diving board.

Oy.

Now what? Do I say no? Do I let him try?

Ok. Fine. Sure. Give it a shot.

I stood by the edge, prepared to go in after him.

Now I'm left trying to figure out what I was so worried about.

Until. The 'high' board.

Not quite as much panache, but he was pretty proud of himself.

Today I'm off to the US Women's Open. A neighbor had an extra ticket, and so we're going to spend the day (much like my husband) on the golf course. The kids are terribly excited to have a sitter, and I'm terribly excited to have a few hours to myself!

Have a great one. Friday's a heartbeat away...

Feels like Friday...

Later this afternoon, we're starting our trek South for some end of the Summer relaxation. I believe we're one of the few places that has the kids starting school after Labor Day... Needless to say, it's been a long summer.

Last week, I was accused of having too many projects going on. True. No use denying. I spent the last week finishing up quite a few things. Pictures to come, as many are before-and-after's.

Today has been filled with packing, laundry and errands - oh my!

Needless to say, as we reach our destination for tonight, I'll be reaching for this:

Monday, July 09, 2007

One Banana, Two Banana.

When I was about nine, my parents enrolled me in swimming lessons. Though I was all for it in theory, by the time they asked me to 'jump' in, I clammed up. Completely. I was terrified.

I was sure the grate at the bottom would suck me in. I was the only kid that wore a mask. Not just goggles, a mask. It wasn't until I was about 16 that I was comfortable in the water. Eventually, I became a confident and competent swimmer. I still have to convince myself that there aren't sharks, and I don't particularly like swimming in 'open' water.

I swore it would never be the same for my kids.

The first two looked like they would take after me. Taking them to the pool was like being molested by an octopus.

We tried lessons at the YMCA before we moved, but the ratio was to high and they didn't really seem to 'get it.'

After moving, I asked around and got several recommendations.

One of them was for a swim school.

The first two went to both the fall and spring session. I could not be happier with the result. The Big Girl can not only swim, but pick things up off the bottom. We tried diving at the neighbor's pool (it's deep enough) and she's really getting the hang of it. The Boy can jump off the edge, turn around and swim back. They are not only comfortable, but thriving.

Now, it's The Toddler's turn to get in the water. They arrange the kids by age and ability. The "Tots" range from 6 months to 36 months and require a parent to be in the water with them. Starting at three years, they are considered a "Little" and don't need parent involvement.

I signed up all three for a two week 'camp.' The Big Girl is repeating her last class. The instructor of her Spring session said she was 'right on the edge' of moving up, but he would like to see more skill mastery. Repeat it is. It's not a race. It's a life skill. The Boy is doing great in his next class, and I can't wait to see what he learns.

I signed The Toddler up for the Littles 1 (out of four for kids age 3 - 5). They had the children play "Red Light, Green Light" kicking at the side:

She had them make "Tiger Scoops" with the barbell:
And with the noodle:

They also had them 'back float' by laying their head on the instructor's shoulder. She put a noodle under the small of their back and had them put their arms out (like a star). She then sang "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" or "ABC's" while they almost relaxed.

Except my girl.

She said she didn't need a noodle.

Or the instructor's shoulder.

She promptly stretched out and floated while the instructor guided her with a light touch under her head. Eventually, the instructor let go completely.

At this point, the parent next to me asked, "Now she's four, right?"

No, she turned three on Saturday.

They finished up by playing "One Banana, Two" where the instructor counts, you guessed it "one banana, two banana" while the child goes face down in the water up to his/her ears. They're aiming for a five count by the end of the two weeks.

The first child got to two. The second child got to three.

My Toddler went to 13.

At the end of class, the instructor suggested moving her up to the Little 2's.

Can't wait to see what she'll do tomorrow.

Summertime

We've only just begun to live,
White lace and promises
A kiss for luck and we're on our way.
And yes, We've just begun.

Before the rising sun we fly,
So many roads to choose
We start our walking and learn to run.
And yes, We've just begun.

Sharing horizons that are new to us,
Watching the signs along the way,
Talking it over just the two of us,
Working together day to day
Together.

And when the evening comes we smile,
So much of life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to grow,
And yes, We've just begun.

Last day of preschool...Last day of first grade...

Summer's here...
It's a charmed life around here I tell you.

I still wonder, though, where did these kids go?

I miss them, my babies. But it just keeps getting better...
