When the cat's away...

My husband is gone most of this week, and a good portion of next. This week the poor guy is in Arizona.

I've been working on the market bags, and am still not completely happy...

On the next incarnation - I left off the pouch and sewed a strap on the inside. Though one works, next time I'm thinking two.
Voila! I boxed out the corners on this one and managed to get the handles 'right.' I cut the binding for this one - It's a little wide, but I like how the colors go together, and it gives the bag a little heft.
I'm getting there, but still not completely satisfied. I decided to take a break from the bags and move on to something a little bigger...

Or at least repetitive... I love the repetition of cutting fabric. It soothes me. This is from a bundle of fat quarters I asked for for Christmas. Yes, I asked for fabric for Christmas...

I love cutting fabric, once I have a project in mind. For my dad's birthday, I found some neat fabric with his name on it - "MyDad's Diner" - complete with classic cars and car-hops, but have been paralyzed when it comes to cutting it. I just can't figure out how best to use it. Did I say my dad's birthday is in October? He has been patiently waiting while I gnash my teeth, trying to figure it out.
My oldest wanted to help so bad. So. Bad. I finally let her help by putting my next pieces together. It did go significantly faster. Still. I feel like a crappy mom because I didn't let her help more. She's at the age she just wants to be with me, and I feel like I'm pushing her away. She wanted to guide the fabric, but selfishly, so did I.
Still... Repetition.

See where this is going? Half have 'blue' corners, half have 'brown.' I'm still not sure what fabric I'm going to use to put it all together.
Also, I'm thinking it needs to be a little bigger. Hopefully I have enough for three more squares.

I was looking for an old fashioned, patchwork type quilt. I think I'm well on my way.

The new bag is great! Love the colors.

The new quilt is going to be fabulous, too.

And I am with your dad, anxiously awaiting what you will create.

I'd love to see how the bag packs with the new box corners

I'm liking the bag with the boxed corners, better than the first version. I'd look like an an idiot carrying it no matter how you made it. I'll stick with my backpacks I guess. Shopping and walking with a bunch o'suff isn't easy.

I like the quilt idea. Maybe it can be handed down. I have a quilt my Great Grandmother made with ties.

They were ties during the depression. Coal mining town. You took what you could get just to survive. This is the warmest thing I've ever slept under. Ever. Even back when. It's since been recovered many times. Every covering remains. I have it. I'll never let it go. (don't let it all go)

ps.. My "friend's" stuff got there days ago and he likes it.
