Best gift ever

One of my favorite toys growing up was my grandparent's set of blocks. Not just any blocks, mind you, but blocks that were painted four solid sides and two diagonal sides. They had their own box and lid. After making the design, you'd put the lid on, flip it over, and check out the reverse of the pattern.

This year for Christmas, my Dad presented me with my very own set:

The last time he was visiting his brother he took picture of the blocks and carefully measured them. He painstakingly cut, sanded, and painted each one by hand and even made them their own box and lid. The kids are under strict instruction not to lose any blocks upon penalty of me crying and stomping around.

Here's another view of the above design:

Here's the reverse:

Fun, no?

The kids will play with this for hours. The only precaution we take is to have most of the other toys put away and they must have all the blocks safely back in the box before moving on to the next activity. Harkens back to a time when kids didn't have many toys and had to take care of what they had. Not like we're presenting the girls with a doll made of rags... At least not yet.

...And Mrs. G...

Check out what's
on my feet! Who exactly do I think I am?!?

amazing. and i'm sure if any of them get lost (which they won't), you'll do more than stomp your feet and be upset.
