This is why I don't do tutorials

Really, I am no good at tutorials. Awhile back I decided to do a Bento Box style quilt. The square is also referred to as a Half Log Cabin.

First off, lay out your materials. Diet Coke is essential for me.


When I'm doing 'serious' sewing, I like to have my iron close by. My Toddler too.


My biggest issue is I don't really know how to explain it in writing, I just know how to do it.

I mean, I could tell you that the fabric starts as a 3 1/2" strip.

And that the center squares are 3 1/2" square.


And from each of the fabrics you need a 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" rectangle.


The final strip is 3 1/2" x 9 1/2" and always press toward the darker fabric.



I mean, I can't tell you how much fabric you'd need, but I can tell you that this works wonderfully with fat quarters. I can tell you also that I'm using tan as both a light and a dark. As I work, I like to lay out what I have done, so I can make changes during the process, rather than when I'm done.

Last night I laid out what I had done. Looking at four squares as a unit, I determined that I need one more row and one more column. I also think there is too much light fabric right now.



It wasn't until I walked around it that I realized I'm only halfway done.


More black, brown and tan. No more light. All will be revealed shortly.
