Neapolitan and Needs a Name

A few weeks back when I was either computerless or internetless or both, I dug through my stash and realized I had a lot of pink scraps.

A lot.

A quilt full.
The kids love this one because it's just right for snuggling with on the couch, and is backed in pink fleece. I like using fleece for backing: even though it still needs to be basted, it's not nearly as shifty as the traditional top-batting-backing sandwich.

I love it too because it was easy (took a day), didn't cost a thing (everything was from my stash - even the fleece), and named it Neapolitan (like the ice cream - yum!).

...

To celebrate Labor Day, the coming of fall, and cooler temperatures, I pieced this yesterday.

I started with a charm pack of fabric: Peace on Earth by Three Sisters.

My oldest helped me figure out how big it should be - with 50 squares, what's the best use of our material - both in amount used and proportion. We drew up a multiplication chart, and she helped me decide. The did a rough draw out on paper. When it came time to line up the pieces, we talked about color value, and how sometimes things may look good on paper, not so good in real life.

Anyway, with nearly everything pre-cut, it was a snap to put together. The blue and the brown are from the line as well. I was originally going to make a quilted purse or two with the fabric, but decided on a baby quilt instead. Of the two leftover fabrics, the blue dotted one will be the backing and the diagonal stripe will be the binding.

Today is the first day of school. Pictures to come tomorrow!

Cool beans. We could use another quilt in the house. I need something with Ohio State on it for my man cave :) The girls like to snuggle under the one made from denim corduroy and old tee shirts. :)

You do good work.

How do you make these so quickly, and yet so neatly? I just ordered two charm packs so I could try and make my first lap quilt. I'm terrified to start sewing and mess it up somehow.

I think I'll bring the sewing machine in for a tune up before I start. Feels like no matter how much I play with the tensions my threads keep bunging up.
