Review: The Daring Book for Girls and a bonus or two

Review: The Daring Book for Girls

Honestly, I haven't read much of this book.

Generally I find the sequels are just a shadow of the original. On first glance, I absolutely fell in love with "The Dangerous Book for Boys." When this came, I didn't quite know what to think of the light blue cover and sparkly lettering. I flipped through it... Not bad. Set it on the counter and went about my day.

As soon as my seven year old daughter arrived home from school, she spied the book. "Is that for me?" It sure is. She snatched it up and headed for her room. About every other day, she'd bring the book to show me or tell me something, then head back to read some more. I found the book this morning on her nightstand, where it's been every night since we've received it.

Occasionally while she's at school, I'd take a peek:
Hopscotch, Tetherball and Jump Rope,
Sleep Outs,
How to Paddle a Canoe (Grandma and Grandpa offered to help with this one),
Rules of Darts,
Words to Impress,
First Aid,
Knots and Stitches,
How to Tie a Sari (something I've always wanted to know)
Princesses of Today.

So why haven't I read more of this book? My daughter hates it when I read over her shoulder. She's given me plenty of things we need to try or learn more about. So overall, I think this sequel has lived up to the expectation.

Adventure is worthwhile in itself.

Not quite Rachael Ray... But close.

The other night I made noodles to go with the chicken. Start to finish, 35 minutes - including rolling out the noodles. Had the kids not helped, it would have been a "30 Minute Meal."

A quick rundown:
Mix noodles, let rest. Spray pot with a little cooking spray, and put on medium heat. Chop carrot, celery, and onion. Add to pan. Cook three or four minutes until they start to soften. Scrape fat from broth, add broth to pot. Add water and chicken base*. Bring to a boil. As that's coming to a boil, roll out the noodles. Add chicken to pot, and noodles slowly to boiling water. Cook noodles about 4 - 5 minutes. Serve.

I wanted to get a picture of the kids helping roll out the noodles... But something about three kids, flour, and a roller they could pinch fingers in wasn't condusive to photography.

There are all sorts of fancy-pants wooden racks out there. This works for me.

*Chicken base can be found with the bouillon. I find it to have better flavor, and be less salty.

And on a more personal note...

Love of mine
Someday you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark
No blinding lights or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of the spark

If heaven and hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark .

Happy Anniversary, Love. Eleven down - a lifetime to go.

I'm definitely going to get the noodle/pasta attachment for the Kitchen Aid and start making beef and noodles. Thanks for the inspiration!
